Nearly 37,000 people were diagnosed with oral cancer in 2010, according to the National Cancer Institute. One of the fastest growing patient segments for oral cancer is young, healthy non-smokers. It is believed that HPV is now the leading cause for oral cancer in American adults.
With early detection, oral cancer has one of the highest rates of survival (88%). Unfortunately, only about 1/3 of all oral cancer discoveries are caught early meaning many patients aren’t diagnosed with the disease until advanced stages. Late discoveries contribute to a low five year survival rate for oral cancer (32%).
While routine visits to the dentist are very important for keeping your teeth and gums healthy, they also give your dentist an opportunity to screen for oral cancer. At each patient exam, Dr. Tim Owens checks patients for the signs of oral cancer and abnormal cell formation.
Oral Cancer Symptoms
Most patients experience no signs of symptoms of oral cancer. In late stages, bleeding sores may develop in the mouth and patients might report difficulty in chewing or swallowing, numbness of the tongue, ear pain, and lumps or hard spots in the mouth. If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should make an appointment to see your dentist immediately.
Oral Cancer Detection
Dr. Owens carefully examines the interior of the mouth, back of your throat, tongue, as well as the lymph nodes in your neck. If abnormal cells are found, Dr. Owens may take a biopsy for further analysis.
