Treating TMJ in Fort Collins
During your evaluation, Dr. Owens will examine your teeth, jaw joint, and jaw muscles to determine the best treatment plan for you. Dr. Owens screens your symptoms to see if we can treat you at our office, or if your TMD would be better treated by a specialist. For mild cases, we can often treat the TMD with an oral appliance or bite splint. For moderate, severe or complex cases, we work with a variety of specialty offices in town. There are various underlying problems that cause TMD and this is why Dr. Owens focuses on discovering the root cause so that we can be sure you receive the right treatment for your TMD.
For mild cases, an oral appliance is a removable device that helps to keep the teeth and jaw in proper position. Usually worn during sleep, an oral appliance may also prevent teeth grinding or clenching, which can lead to tooth wear and contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.
For more moderate to severe cases, Dr. Owens works with and refers to a specialized orthodontist, maxillofacial oral surgeon, and sleep apnea specialist.
